Included in the PRIMUS Software distribution is a program called WS_FTP.
FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol." FTP Software like WS_FTP
will allow you to copy files from your local drive to a remote computer(upload)
or to retrieve files located on a remote machine to your own computer(download).
If you create a home page, you will need to upload the files that
you have made into the directory you have been assigned at PRIMUS.
Here is an explanation of how to upload files to your web site using
WS_FTP. With minor changes, these can be used to connect to FTP sites
anywhere on the Internet.
First you must connect to PRIMUS, and then start WS_FTP. The main program window will appear, along with a smaller, Session Properties window, in front of it.
If it is not already, you should fill out this Window as you see
here. Start by clicking the New button.
- Profile Name - This field is for you to be able to identify
the settings. You might want to put something indicating that
these settings will be for your web site, for example.
- Host Name/Address - This field is where you will write
the name or the IP address of the machine you wish to connect
to. If it is for your web space, you should put in 'shellhost.primushost.com'
(do not include the quotes), where 'shellhost' is replaced by
your actual shell host (shell, shell2, or shell3; shell.primushost.com
customers see this page
for more info). An example would be 'shell3.primushost.com' if
your account is hosted on the shell3 server. If you do not know
which server hosts your account, email support@primushost.com
or call 781-586-6100.
- Host Type - This field is to let WS_FTP know what kind
of system it will be connecting to. Set this field to 'UNIX' (if
you are connecting to your shell host) or to 'Automatic Detect'
in general.
- User ID - Enter your username here.
- Password - Enter your password here. It will appear only
as asterisks, so type it carefully. If you click the Save password
box, WS_FTP will save your password and you won't have to enter
it again.
That is all you need to fill out. You can then hit the OK button,
and click here to
continue.
